Ms. Dunikoski joined the Cobb County District Attorney`s Office in September 2019. She is Head of the Appeals Department. She advises and litigates legal issues before the Court of Appeals of Georgia and the Supreme Court. Prior to joining the Cobb District Attorney`s Office, Ms. Dunikoski worked for the Fulton County District Attorney`s Office for 17 years. Rubin added that he and his co-lawyer Jason Sheffield decided early on not to seek legal fees from outside sources. “We didn`t want to get money from groups we personally disagreed with,” Rubin said. Dunikoski is a career lawyer with nearly 20 years of courtroom experience, according to her biography in Cobb County. She was a prosecutor in the Atlanta Public Schools fraud scandal in 2015, where she worked with a team of four other prosecutors in the “longest criminal trial in the state of Georgia,” according to her biography. Marcus Arbery Sr., Ahmaud Arbery`s father, told CNN that continuing the trial had been “difficult” for the family.
The prosecution team for the trial will also include Larissa Ollivierre, assistant district attorney for Cobb County, and Paul Camarillo, senior assistant prosecutor. In 2008, she was named Prosecutor of the Year. Notable cases include the Atlanta Public School CRCT cheating scandal (State v. Beverly Hall, et al.). Ms. Dunikoski worked with a team of four other prosecutors in the longest criminal case in the state of Georgia (August 11, 2014 to April 1, 2015), which led to a successful conclusion. Gregory McMichael is a former investigator with the Brunswick Judicial Circuit. His son, Travis McMichael, was a mechanical engineer for the U.S. Coast Guard, according to a legal filing filed by his attorney last year.
He then asked the dissenting defense attorneys to draft a legal motion “that guides me through the First Amendment rights you want to violate and how you intend to do so.” Dunikoski noted that although the McMichaels and Bryan were convicted of hate crimes this week, their prosecution team made a strategic decision not to present evidence of the defendants` racist views toward black people to the jury. In a murder case, the state does not have to prove motive or intent. “I`m a lawyer,” the Fox News legal analyst explained. “I can tell you that I`m very, very embarrassed by the way several defense attorneys have handled their cases, and it could very well have hurt them and their clients with the jury.” Immediately after the three defendants were convicted of murdering Ahmaud Arbery on Wednesday, Fox News contributor Ted Williams dragged the defense team`s “highly offensive” actions throughout the emotional process. Ahmaud Arbery`s dying defense team again demanded a mock trial on Monday. Bryan and the McMichaels are charged with murder, aggravated assault and false incarceration in the death of Arbery, who was killed in February 2020 in Glynn County, Georgia. After the video aired, Gough said his client and family had been targeted by protesters. Gough said Bryan and his fiancée had to go into hiding. He specializes in complex organized crime and focuses on investigating and prosecuting complex multi-accused gang cases, gang-related homicides and other violent gang crimes. Prior to joining the Cobb District Attorney`s Office, Mr.
Camarillo worked in the Fulton County District Attorney`s Office for five years. During his time at the Fulton County office, Mr. Camarillo successfully prosecuted hundreds of crimes and tried a variety of jury trials ranging from murder and gangs to armed robbery, aggravated assault and drug trafficking. Mr. Camarillo was assigned to the Gang Unit and Major Case Division before leaving the office. Chatham County Superior Court Judge Timothy Walmsley was appointed by Waycross Circuit Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Knight to oversee the case. “At this point, I`m not entirely sure what you`re doing,” Walmsley said. “At this point, it`s almost like you`re just trying to continue this for purposes other than just bringing this to the court`s attention, and I find that offensive from the court`s perspective.” Travis McMichael and his father, Gregory McMichael, along with William “Roddie” Bryan, were not charged in the February 2020 incident until months later, when a video surfaced that appeared to show the McMichaels chasing Arbery in their truck while he was jogging. They argued that the jury could be influenced by Arbery`s mother, who cried during court. Carr then requested an investigation from the U.S. Department of Justice and announced in May 2020 that Cobb County, Georgia District Attorney Joyette M. Holmes was leading the case.
Bob Rubin, a defense attorney based in Decatur, Georgia, will represent Travis McMichael. “I will say that this is directly a response to your statements, which I find reprehensible,” the judge said. Rubin said that before agreeing to take over the case, he first asked his wife and children for permission. “Even though they said no, I took it anyway and had to convince them later,” he said. “I thought it would be the experience of a lifetime, and it was.” Gough, who caused a stir last week after calling for “more black pastors” to be allowed in the courtroom, again contradicted Monday when he confronted the Rev. Jessie Jackson, a civil rights leader, in the courtroom and asked, “How many pastors does the Arbery family have?” Arbery has been in trouble with the law. In 2013, he brought a gun to a high school basketball game, Glynn County Police Chief Rod Ellis testified in May. Arbery was also arrested in 2017 after attempting to steal a television, another official said.
Defense attorneys for the three men wanted to be allowed to speak to jurors about these previous incidents and Arbery`s convictions, but prosecutors argued that Arbery`s criminal record was irrelevant to the actions the three men took that day, chasing him through the subdivision armed with weapons and using pickup trucks. Walmsley rejected the request for a false trial, saying steps were being taken to ensure jurors were not affected by anything that happens outside the courthouse in the case. “Jackie is Greg,” the older McMichael can be heard saying in the voicemail. “Could you call me as soon as possible? My (incomprehensible) and I were involved in a shoot and I need advice right away. Could you please call me as soon as you can? Thank you. Good bye. Waycross Judicial Circuit District Attorney George Barnhill later took over the case, but leaned back because he discovered his son worked in Johnson`s office and had worked with Gregory McMichael on an earlier Arbery prosecution, creating a conflict of interest, according to a news release from the Georgia Attorney General`s Office.
